What do you guys think about tribute bands? I notice that we get a lot around the St. Louis area. We even have tribute bands for bands that are still playing! Are there any that you enjoy or do you avoid them? Just curious about what music fans really think about it.

I can't name any off the top of my head but there are tribute bands I enjoy. I don't necessarily view them as a bad thing, just guys playing music that has personally moved them, you know? I would definitely like to hear people in tribute bands play original music but I don't furrow my brow if they only play covers.

I work with a group of guys in a Tool tribute band. They are very hard working, talented people. They do a great job playing the songs and working the crowd. They also have an all original band they play in but Tool affords them to actually make money and pay some bills doing music. It's a shame because they have really good original material but people would rather pay to see and hear and band that pay tribute to a band they know than to learn to love the songs this band is capable of doing. I guess you could say I am conflicted but either way I love those guys.
I've been asked several times to join Nirvana tribute bands and one time I even attempted it. We practiced for about 2 weeks but it never felt right and I just couldn't make it work for me. As much a I love their music it wasn't in my heart to pretend I wanted to be Kurt Cobain for money. I'll jut tick to what I know and love to do which is write and play the music that calls to me.

Yeah, I can imagine that it might feel odd/ not right being in a tribute band where your whole musical existence is trying to bank off of the work of someone else. I don't think I have an issue with tribute bands and would go see some if I felt they were good enough but I can't imagine it is a very rewarding experience for the musician to constantly try to be someone else. I hadn't really heard of many grunge tribute bands oddly enough. I always wondered if any out there were decent enough to listen to.

There re some good grunge related ones out there. I have a buddy who is in a great Pearl Jam tribute. They are fun to see live but to listen to any tribute band recordings, since they play everything so straight like the album I just would rather hear the album of the real band? You know?

They are called Ten Club: www.facebook.com/pages/Ten-Club-Pearl-Jam-Tribute/230297884813They are out of Nebraska and I know they come to IA sometimes but not sure about IL. DuoSonic from this board and I used to be in a band with their singer. The guy can sing anything, in fact he did a duet with Glen Hansard at the PJ 20 show. Very cool.

I never had a problem with tribute bands, though I've never seen any, although I think there might have been a Beatles tribute at this one 4th of July that wasn't so bad. I wouldn't turn down the opportunity to go to a concert, but I'd probably prefer an original band. I don't even practice that many covers myself. Oh, and semi-related, there was this band that mixed Alive by Pearl Jam and some Christmas songs, and I thought they mixed them pretty well.
